How it all ends

The link above is a video about why we should do something about global warming.

The link above is to the same guy, as he describes in about 40 videos why he's not wrong.

An index to the above videos.

I think we should all watch these, and spread them around to as many people as we can. This is the most thorough explanation of the issue I've ever seen. And after watching it I agree with him that global warming is the most dangerous threat we've faced as a species yet, (with the sole exception of the Cuban Missile Crisis apparently) Apart from that, this is the closest we've ever come to annihilating the human population of Earth, and probably many other populations as well.

I've seen this, but I need to say a thing or two about the statements you made.
This is not a thorough explanation, because this did not explain the details of the issue. The author's argument is in favor of "risk management," he does not attempt to verify or deny any data involved.
Furthermore, he does not state that global warming is the most dangerous threat to the species, but that the 'worst case scenario' of global warming would be the most dangerous. He also concedes that such a scenario is not likely... but that's not the point of his argument.
He is in favor of taking action to minimize the risk of the worst case "dooms-day" scenario.

I agree that I would like to minimize risk, but the method for doing so is vague. Policy change, through influencing public opinion, is the apparent goal. It sounds obstensibly nice, but what does that really mean?

I'm a tough sell on "global warming," for the same reason I'm a tough sell on all hot-button political issues. These ideas get hijacked by interest groups and politicians to make you feel some strong emotion. The "possible scenarios" are always very extreme situations; I think this is because the groups that support them desperately want someone to listen to them. For example, I care a lot more about "pulling out of Iraq" if I am being told that doing so will cause "immediate civil war." That's a pretty bad case scenario, most outcomes would likely not be such an extreme.

The most important thing to remember in all of this is to think critically. Give it some good hard thinking with whatever knowledge you have, and go with it. Don't let yourself be swayed by emotional appeals and faulty logic.
I find it sad when citizens let emotional tug-words like "terrorism" be said as a justification for politicians to violate rights. I'm alluding to the Patriot Act. Any other issue can be spun in this way. If you like meat, don't let someone say "global warming" and scare you into voting for mandatory vegetarianism. Perhaps that's a worst case scenario too, but it's just an example of why you want to think carefully.

I'll leave my discussion of the science of global climate change for another time, that's not really relevant to this post.

Re: How it all ends

Did you actually watch all of them? I'm guessing not, otherwise you would agree that it is very thorough, and he does explain the science of global warming. He leaves a lot up to the scientists to decide, but then states what said scientists have said, citing their exact words even, and they say pretty much the same thing. Watch the rest of them. At the very least, watch the ones he claims are designed for skeptics, which are on page 1 and 2, and are titled "Get what you want", "I hope I'm wrong", and "No holds barred".

You might find them interesting.

I watched only the first movie, and as such my comments apply only to it.

However my argument still applies; don't let yourself get caught up in the emotion until you have thought about it carefully. That reallys applies to everything.

Re: How it all ends

He explains this subject for 3 hours. I'm not going to take the most drastic view on this, though admittedly I haven't looked into it all that much, as he urges everyone who watches it to do, but until the end of the videos, this seems to be the most dissempassioned argument out there. He takes both sides, and argues the same way I would, using the brute force approach, and he has the force it up.

So, maybe that applies for most things, but this 3 hour lecture really goes the extra 5 miles.

I'd like you to watch a few of the other videos. Sure, the first one is a basic overview of everything that he will eventually talk about. But he painstakingly proves every bit of what he's talking about in the other videos. And if you don't believe me, please check it out. Watch a few of them a night, and see what you think. The links are in the above posts, so I won't repost them.
