Message:   WCSFO MEETING MINUTES
3/19/05

WCSFO President Ted Lind, of Walleyes Unlimited, opened our meeting at 9:57a.m. with an introduction of all present.
Secretary, Larry Van Veghel, of the Wisconsin Fishing Club, read the minutes. They were accepted as read. Our treasurer, Chuck Plotz, of Walleyes Unlimited, said our checking account has $2881.74. His report was accepted as read.
State Senator Reynolds asked if we’d like a table at an upcoming meeting. Ted said he’d man a table.
We received a “Thank You” letter for our Kids Fishing Clinics from St. Mathias’s scouting program.
Ted Lind read a letter from Mercury Free Wisconsin that was written by Eric Uram of the Sierra Club Milwaukee office. Eric Skindzeluski was the first nominator, and Gene Johanson seconded it. We voted unanimously to support of making Wisconsin mercury free..
Skindzelewski, of Lakeshore Fishing Club, announced that the Summerfest people wanted to close the island access in Milwaukee. He has worked for over 20 years to get this fishing site open, and he has been successful. The Lakeshore Boat Club has also assisted in this project.
Jerry Wrench brought up paying for a professional website versus our organization doing it. The cost would be $60.00/month. We made no formal decision.
Steve Huett, of the Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources, WDNR, gave us background on walleye stocking in the Milwaukee River. WDNR is currently looking into whether or not to continue stocking walleyes.
Representing numerous fish species, our members and guests stated their support of having walleyes stocked in the Milwaukee River Basin. Warren Zaren of the Wisconsin Alliance of Bass Tournaments officially acknowledged their support of the Lakeshore Fishing Club’s attempt to keep walleyes in the Milwaukee River. WCSFO did not have an opinion either way in the past, so we unanimously voted to support having both salmon and walleyes in the Milwaukee River Basin. WCSFO secretary Larry Van Veghel is to send an emailed letter to our state senators, representatives, Governor Doyle, the secretary of the WDNR and Mike Staggs who is head of WDNR fisheries in Wisconsin. Bob Riepenhoff and other media people were also to get carbon copies of this letter. Smallmouth bass have already rebounded, and the habitat improvement will benefit the stocking of sturgeon. Both the sturgeon and walleyes were once native to this River Basin.
Walleyes For Tomorrow, Inc. (WFT) Milwaukee River Basin Chapter president Gene Schmidt spoke about the controversy brewing between salmon and walleye anglers in the Milwaukee area. WFT is in favor of having both salmon and walleyes available in the Milwaukee River Basin and they have worked with the WDNR to prevent salmon predation.
Ted Lind said that Muskies Inc. brought up in the Warm Water Fisheries Committee that only one line and no downriggers or planers should be used when trolling for fish in Wisconsin. We did not vote on this, but all present thought that this was not a good idea.
Jerry Wrench, of the Lakes Area Recreation Association of Twin Lakes (Kenosha County) told us that the village of Twin Lakes has been vacating land from unimproved access sites after 40 years. They’ve been letting property owners on each side of the launches or the Village have the land for FREE. The Village does not want control of the properties, so they let the property owners have the free land. This removes access sites for anglers and other lake users.
Wrench would like it if whenever a Wisconsin lake access property is vacated, someone representing “the public” oversees it. He also stated that the public isn’t aware of this major land giveaway, and the public needs to get involved in local issues.
Cornell Strike said he’d work with Jerry Wrench on getting a resolution put through to stop the vacating of public lands on lakes and the giving of them to landowners.
Warren Zaren, also representing CAST, said there are many tournaments and ice fisherees that are not applying for WDNR permits. The WDNR is looking into a $1,000.00 or $2,000.00 fine for people who don’t get permits.
Zaren said we need to find a way to fund the 4 BASS tournaments having the experimental culling studies this year and next.
We talked about getting Milwaukee County funding to keep the House of Correction Fish Hatchery open for the stocking of the Kids Fishing Clinic ponds, but even though we support this, no action was taken.

Sincerely,

L.A. Van Veghel
WCSFO secretary
