The Alzheimer's Forum

  It's very difficult to have a family member or a close friend suffer from an incurable disease like Alzheimer’s.   It's hard to know just what to say sometimes, how to help them, how to be with them.  What helps, though, is being willing to risk getting close enough to them to really understand what it means to have the illness.  This takes courage.  But if we are willing to do this we make ourselves more available to the person -- we can walk in their shoes, and in doing so, we open ourselves to the possibility of discovering those precious and intimate moments of closeness and connectedness that make our lives truly meaningful.

Welcome to an important part of your journey of discovery about Alzheimer's.  The Alzheimer’s Forum has been designed to help connect with others about Alzheimer’s – to share information and expertise, to inspire hope, and to build faith that a greater sense of community and fellowship can help all of us better understand and deal with this devastating illness. It's designed to help you discuss the illness as both a medical disease and as a psychiatric disorder.

The Alzheimer’s forum is intended to provide useful information on the social, psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual life of the Alzheimer’s sufferer. The following is a list of topics to help you get started:

* What's the difference between Alzheimer’s and normal aging?

* What are the diagnostic and treatment protocols used by clinicians?

* How do you tell if it's Alzheimer’s or some other medical condition?

* How do you gauge the severity and progression of the disease?

* Can the Alzheimer’s sufferer make his or her own decisions?

* What about anxiety and agitation, depression, anger, and impatience?

* What about wandering and inappropriate expressions of sexuality?

* What about seeing or hearing things that aren’t there?

* What about alternative medicines?

* How do you mange the person’s surroundings?

* How do you talk with someone with Alzheimer’s?

* What are some activities to stimulate and maintain thinking and emotional stability?

* How can you prevent Alzheimer’s?

The more you learn and share with others, the more the suffering from this devastating disease can be abated. Enjoy your experience in the Alzheimer’s Forum.
